In this blog, I'll be enlightening you all and make you aware of how the Fitness Industry really is, how it works and how generally people/ members are fooled in handing them a Personal Trainer.
It is just to spread awareness among the general public so that they won’t be duped further.
I bet many of you had not even been given an opportunity to even CHOOSE a personal trainer. You just step into the gym for your desired goals, ask for a Personal Trainer (PT) and you get one. But before that, there are classes of Personal Trainers. Example- Bronze (New Joinees), Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond (Most Experienced) or whatever... In most of the gyms, this is the most ridiculous thing as the Diamond level trainers, which are supposedly ”know all-senior-experienced-superexpensive” trainers are actually worst of the lot. I'm not generalizing as I’ve seen some really genuine senior trainers and learned so much from them but most of them sadly are like that and just take the advantage of being a "senior". The ratio is embarrassingly less. 2 of 15 trainers in a good commercial gym might be really genuine, passionate towards their profession and follow a ”no bullshit” approach by applying the scientific principles taught to them in their curriculum of fitness education.
The general gym population is more inclined towards these so-called ”Seniors”.
So what do you really mean by a ”Senior Trainer”??
To me a senior trainer is someone who’s not just into the field of Personal Training, but also the one who keeps himself updated, who has a lot of knowledge regarding this subject and a role model for his fellow juniors. But unfortunately, this might be the only industry where the term SENIOR has no meaning. It is because of a big noted flaw which is UPDATING YOURSELF. Understand that the Fitness Industry stands on a rock-solid platform for science and science keeps on evolving. A Personal Trainer must make sure that he keeps himself updated in the industry so he can see his performance go sky high. Not just his, for his members too..
There are ways and means in which a member in the gym is allotted a Personal Trainer. Let's take a scenario... You as a member walk into the gym for the first time. You are greeted by the Sales Dept/ Front Desk Staff ( which has no ounce of knowledge regarding fitness) who shows you the amenities and facilities the gym provides. Impressed, you take membership and ask for a Personal Trainer. Then the Sales Dept will show you the usual classes of Personal Trainers. Say you choose the highest class. Then the Sales Dept calls in the Manager of the gym who, by the way, is also a Personal Trainer. The gym management is the one who decides whom to allot the Personal Training. Remember, a trainer earns a lot in taking Personal Training and this is where politics, greed and unprofessional approaches come into the picture. Beware, you might even go into the hands of an Uncertified so-called Trainer or to someone who is not a valid certificate holder. So always ask the trainer whom you are allotted to, to SHOW you their certification.
So how can a Personal Trainer keep himself updated? For starting Personal Training, most of the gyms demand a valid certification from leading fitness academies which provide professional training and teachings to the trainers. Some of them shockingly don’t. Anyway, this certificate has a validity. 1 year, 2 years or more, depends on school to school. Once this validity is over, technically, you are no longer a Certified Personal Trainer. If you are regular in reading my blogs you might’ve noticed me writing ‘’CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER’’ at the end of every blog. Now you know the reason why I write it.
Whenever you are joining a Personal Training, always ask the trainer to SHOW you a valid certification. Whether that particular trainer shouts a lot during sets, has a good physique, has been in the gym for quite a long time, has a fan following, is a senior, is recommended by your friends because it gave him/her results… Doesn’t matter... It's your very right as a member to ask for it because you are paying for it. If the trainer is really so reputed or respected in his field, he’ll be glad and proud to show you his achievement!
